Hi I'm Sharon

I’m a mum to two little adventure travel kids, and wife to my soul mate. I’m the voice here and in most cases the photographer as well.

Travel runs deep through my veins. And it’s no wonder given I’ve lived in Papua New Guinea as a child, Honduras as a teenager and Dubai during my 20’s and 30’s. I’m a wanderluster to the core and always looking forward to the next travel adventure.

I can’t believe I still haven’t put anything up on the grid yet about my very first women’s trip to Morocco. Holy s*@t… I can’t be right in the head!

(Or maybe, I’m still just really crap at socials.)

So today I’m breaking my silence… it was so much bloody fun. I really do get emotional as I think about it.

🧱 It hit me like a tone of bricks as we ALL did the 1 hour walk together into Ahmed’s village. Having done the same walk with my hubby and girls (5 years earlier), under the shadow of the towering Mt Toubkal (the highest mountain in North Africa)…

WOW… How lucky am I, to be showing this incredible place, to a group of amazing women and friends (new and old). I got all choked up as I tried to explain to them, this feeling of deep gratitude and appreciation… and still don’t know how to express and articulate that emotion!

Anyways…

Thanks to Morocco for showing us an unforgettable first trip!!!

I’m Sharon!

🗺️ For most of the past decade our family has been on the move… travelling the world. We’ve raised our two girls through different cultures, slow journeys, constantly changing scenery and climates.

I also grew up moving between countries and that sense of adventure and curiosity about the world has always stayed with me. The reality of it all, is that this has led us to redesign our lives several times over!

👩‍💻 Through this space here on IG and also through my blog, I’ve shared the practical side of that life, from worldschooling, slow travel, work exchange, budgeting etc etc etc, and how families can actually make it work.

But of course life doesn’t always move in straight lines.

🎀 A few years ago, while slow-travelling through Guatemala, I had a niggling feeling that something wasn’t right with my body. That instinct led to a breast cancer diagnosis and a sudden return to New Zealand for treatment.

Naturally, It was this journey that has probably changed me the most.

🌾 Over time though, things have slowly shifted again. Bali life is a new chapter with my family, I find my lost confidence returning slowly, travel has returned to our lives, and I have started building new ideas that feel exciting again.

These days you’ll still find me writing about travel, but also now I’ve found a new energy and passion, one where I show women some of my most favourite destinations in the world.

👯‍♀️ So.. my hope is that in this space I’m creating right here, that you’ll find some curiosity, some freedom, some inspiration, or the confidence to say fuck it, I feel like a change, or I want to join this community of travellers, or hey… maybe even… I deserve something a bit different in life.

🌾 Hidden gems in Jatiluwih! BALI 🌾

🛵 We spent a day exploring the rice terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage site about 80 to 90 minutes from Canggu.

💰 Entry costs 75,000 IDR for adults and 50,000 IDR for kids, which goes toward supporting local farmers and maintaining roads. That includes parking and access to the trails.

🛂 If you’re on a KITAS visa, it’s cheaper still.

🫣 It’s not overcrowded and there are several little hidden gems to explore in the area.

🌶️ From the lovely locals you’ll meet on the trail selling spices, vanilla and rice, to others who might offer you cacao pod fruit to try. It’s a cultural experience in Bali that’s worth your time and visit.

🛟 But one of my personal favourite finds was this tubing experience.Tubing down the natural spring-fed irrigation system. These ancient channels are called Subak and they’re part of why this region is UNESCO-listed.

🦄 We just met our very good friends @clanwander - for the first time… in the FLESH!

We’ve been friends on the gram since 2020 - they were already deep into full-time travel and we were just getting started.

That travel family community on IG is a tight-knit little world, and somehow our paths kept weaving through the same places, just never at the same time.

💥 Until now!

They came to stay with us and together we hung out for a couple of days. And the moment they walked through the front door… it felt like we were old friends. Even though we’d never hugged in person before.

So very grateful that our paths finally crossed and hope we get to see more of them while they spend some time in this part of the world!

For a while now I’ve been thinking about doing an all girl trip to Morocco - a 10 or 14 day tour around my favourite places, with some of my favourite Moroccan people!

💸 The Truth - Relocating to Bali is NOT cheap!

So in the light of always keeping things transparent here, I’m going to highlight the fact, that setting up in Bali is not a cheap exercise!

Here’s how things add up so far…

🏫 Schooling -

Back home we have access to free public school system. Whereas in Bali we pay for private school. Annual school fees range from 4,500 to 18,000 USD.

🛂 Visas -

This depends on what type of visa you are applying for. But a yearly KITAS can range between 400 to 800+ USD per person.

🏡 Housing -

By comparison you get way better bang for your buck when it comes to rental. And naturally it depends on the area you live in, if you have a pool or how many bedrooms you have. However most of the time you need to pay 6 months or a year upfront in rent… which is a killer on the bank balance. Rent prices if you’re looking for long term options, start at about 15,000 USD per year and go UP UP UP ⬆️

These are the three main expenses we have found in setting up. On the other hand, fuel is cheap, eating out is extremely affordable, groceries are cheaper here than back home. I guess it all balances out at some point.

Have you ever visited Bali and noticed these curved bamboo poles lining the streets? This is the Penjor! 🌴✨

Reaching up to 10 meters high, these beautiful installations symbolize the harmony between humans, nature, and the divine. Local families make the Penjor for Galungan celebration (which happens every 210 days).

It is considered an offering to the gods for the sacred Mount Agung, the tallest volcanic mountain in Bali. Each Penjor is adorned uniquely with symbolic offerings like fruits, rice, coconut leaves, traditional cakes, and even coins. Each item representing prosperity, gratitude, and blessings.

Next time you’re strolling through Bali, pause and admire the Penjors - they carry deep meanings and representations woven into their beauty.

They are beautiful! And they’ll be around until next week… this is because after 35 days they’re taken down. Have you spotted a Penjor during your Bali adventures? 🌺
