Those of you who have been following our stories will know we’ve been living in San Marcos, Guatemala on our latest work exchange. We’ve spent 5 weeks, loving it. But during this time I felt my boob tingling, and when Google didn’t answer my questions, I decided to go get it checked.

Long story short it appears to be breast cancer and we’re on our way back to New Zealand. Never would I have imagined that this would be the thing that saw us returning home after almost 3 years of full-time travel. Mother trucker!

I’ve cried unashamedly in public a lot over the last weeks. I’ve also dropped the F bomb a lot, and I’ve consumed more wine than usual.

But I’m also feeling so grateful to have been HERE! People and place have made such an impact throughout this shit show. To all of you, you know who you are… thank you… I love you all millions!

To this bullshit growing in my left breast… you can bugger off. We are coming home to get you gone!

🔑 Hostels with kids! To take the kids or not?

As you know, we travel slow and we travel on the cheap at the moment. In order to make our dollars stretch further we hunt around for accommodation on a budget.

One way to do this is by staying in backpacking hostels.

But are they safe, do they accept children and in the end do they actually save us money?

⛑ Safety - I always do some research before I book a hostel. I read the reviews on Hostel World, ring and speak to someone on the phone, and/or reach out and chat with them on Instagram. From those interactions I go with my gut… if it feels right we book.

👧 Accepting Children - Many times on Hostel World they claim not to accept children. But when I check, they DO.

💰 Saving Money - The thing with hostels is you pay per person, there are no discounts for kids normally… so we actually only book a hostel when its under 10 Euros per person. Otherwise no it won’t help us save money.

But here’s the thing… I’m always asking for the cheapest deal, so often we end up in dorm shared rooms. And they are totally fine!!!

Our children are always warmly welcomed when we book a hostel stay!

And without fail we meet AWESOME travellers, we learn new things, we feel a sense of community and connection.

Hostel stays with kids for slow travel is an absolute yes for us… we have had nothing but the most positive experiences.

🩴 Beach Cleanup Shopping… Warning you might find this gross!

🦶🍓Okay we might be onto something new. There was literally SOOOOO much rubbish blown onto this beach that Boo was able to find herself a new pair of flip flops. Yup… I told you… gross! But I figured they’ve been here long enough in the sun to kill any toe jams.

So we said, go for it!! Knock your socks off Boo!

🪥🪥🪥🪥 And in the space of 50 metres we found ALL of these kids shoes. Boo lined them up and chose her favourites. We also found this cool bucket, fidget spinners, many toothbrushes, kids toys & much much more!!!

All plastic.

Don’t worry we won’t begin toothbrush shopping on our beach cleanups.

♻️ All jokes aside… There is something hectic about the trash that blows in from the ocean along the Yucatan coast of Mexico. Something about the currents I think. But basically, much of this trash comes from other countries and lands up on the beach here.

🙊 Most beaches are populated enough, and people are constantly doing beach clean ups. But when you visit the more remote beaches, like we have a few times now, this is what we find. There is no-one living here and this rubbish begins to accumulate in excess!

🌊 It’s quite honestly soul destroying… and I have absolutely no idea what the answer or solution might be. Until we find one, we’ll continue beach cleanup shopping, and supporting organisations like @theoceancleanup and @take3forthesea

And YES incase you were wondering, Boo found a pair and has been wearing them for 6 weeks now ⭐️

💸 Making money while travelling - we have lift off!

Earlier last year I wrote a post on how we budget for full-time travel. Mike said goodbye to his short-term contract work which meant from that moment on we were on a fixed figure for the remainder of our travels. I was concerned that our small budget wouldn’t sustain our travel for more than 6 months. But here we are 9 months on and we’re still going!

We’ve managed this primarily through finding budget travel options and signing up for Workaway and HelpX.

📈 BUT also now… and this excites me the most… our website has started to make money honey!

🐌 It’s a trickle at this stage but each month it climbs a little more. I almost can’t believe that it’s all coming together as I’d imagined this time last year.

👩‍💻 It has meant a lot of dedication, hard work and learning a WHOLE new skill set! I knew nothing about blogging in the beginning and building a website was a foreign concept. But I love it!!

Do you need a course to learn blogging? No you don’t, but it definitely helped me. I was blogging blindly for a whole year without any progress and then stumbled across the Blog Course @boostrapblogging by @bucketlistbri and it changed everything! I immediately had direction with my website and just weeks later noticed traffic increasing. And now here we are supplementing our travel!

🙋‍♀️ IF you are thinking about setting up a blog and wondering whether to do it. I’ve been where you are, I know the struggle and I’d be happy to help.

🙊 These two need to learn Español! Have your kids learnt a second language?

Now that we are travelling this part of the world for the next year - it makes sense that these two learn to speak Spanish. I feel a deep need to get them on the road to Español.

🛵 But I just don’t know the quickest, easiest way to get them there… maybe there isn’t a quick or easy way.

🚌 I speak enough Spanish to get by, and Mike is trying his best to learn too. But for the kids I expect it will be easier - In fact, I’d love to put them in a local school here in Mexico for a couple months.

😱 If you’ve been watching our stories you would have seen recently that we BROKE our own sustainable travel values. We rented a quad bike and took it on a day trip along a track from one village to another.

🛑 But let me explain! Typically it would take 2 buses and 6 hours return to get to the village. Alternatively, if you rent a quad, you can get there via a sandy track in 90 minutes along one of the prettiest stretches of coastline. We preferred this option!!!

So there we go… sometimes we break our own rules. But hey we can’t ALL be perfect ALL of the TIME though right?

3️⃣ This is our third Christmas on the road as full-time travellers… I actually can’t believe how time has flown.

🏝 And this year we have found the perfect little beach town. It’s off the beaten track in the Yucatan. And to protect it’s location, I’m not going to geotag, but if you would like to know where it is then feel free to send me a DM and I’ll let you know.

🐚The beach is long, the sand is white, the shells are huge… it’s windy at this time of the year so it’s a kite surfers hub. We are living in a camping ground, in a tent with two double beds, and power, so it’s comfortable and super cosy.

💰 But the best part… we are only paying USD $7 a night! For all for of us. Another reminder to always look for long stay deals!!

Only two years late… we’ve finally made it to Mexico!

🧨 If you’ve been following our travel story from the beginning you’ll know that we’ve been trying to get right here. And if you can’t tell by the grin on my face… we are brimming to be here.

The original plan was to fly to the USA first to buy a 4x4, then to drive south. However we learned that selling a US plated car in central and South America is almost impossible. We also learnt that because we had visited Yemen, getting a visa for the US would not be easy.

🔮 So we rustled up a new plan and now here we are backpacking through Mexico. After Mexico we’ll continue south through Central America.

I felt like I really really needed this mini mumcation and getaway with my bestie.

Mike the legend, took the four kids so me and my best friend could take a boutique getaway to the beautiful @villa.riublanc Hotel in Costa Blanca, Spain.

And I honestly felt like we found the most perfect piece of Spanish paradise. The beautiful 5 bedroom boutique hotel is MY kind of place…

- beautiful views from comfortable bedrooms
- a picturesque pool surrounded by olive trees
- hand selected bottles of local wine from the honesty bar
- carefully designed spaces
- and nearby some of the best restaurants Spain has to offer

Not to mention, the lovely Dirk and Patricia… the humble and gracious owners of Villa Riu Blanc. Our stay was perfect, and I was so very grateful to them for this perfect weekend getaway.

💪 Morocco… you were the BEST!!! But it’s time I closed up this chapter as we have new full-time adventures up our sleeve!

🗺 You know when you love a place, but there are so MANY places to see in the world that you know you probably won’t go back… well that’s not the case for Morocco.

✅ We WILL BE back… I’m already planning our return. Maybe even a business venture in mind for Morocco. A land of so much opportunity and beauty.

🧬 To everyone that we connected with in Morocco we are so very grateful to have met you. Thanks to these moments with each of you, we fell further in love with the country.

꩜ And to finish up, I’m sharing this photo taken in a lighthouse in Tangier. In New Zealand we call this shape a koru, which means new beginnings. Morocco was a place of new beginnings for us as a family and so this photo both symbolises and concludes our time in Morocco perfectly.

🔷 This post comes with a warning! Chefchaouen - the Instagram famous city in Morocco. The streets are not as quiet as they appear here!

🦋 This was a tough one for us. We knew its popularity had grown due to its fame on Instagram. But we weren't quite prepared for just how much. Noted we were there during the peak of the summer holidays, so had both domestic and international tourists.

🅿️ Chefchaouen was a natural stop on our trip north from Fes and after eight weeks we had gotten used to the hustle and bustle of Morocco.

🧞‍♂️ But Chefchaouen was a different kind of hustle and did again bring home the impact of over-tourism.

🫐 It was initially hard to comprehend the amount of people over-dressed scurrying around town looking for that perfect shot.

🌀 Lingering in doorways for far too long without consideration of other travellers or in some case locals.

🔷 It was also surprising to see that several of these picture perfect locations were actually set up and came with a cost.

🗣 With that said, we too couldn't help but snap a couple of pics while we wandered through the medina. We also met several lovely locals, spent a morning at the local famers market and took a day trip to Akchour to check out Gods bridge and chill in the fresh water.

🧭 But we'd be lying if we said Chefchaouen didn't play with our moral compass a little.

Questions we are frequently asked:

- families CAN workaway or HelpX, there is a filter in the search options
- you don’t pay the host, there is only a small annual fee to join the Workaway platform. HelpX is free.
- there are options worldwide - some more than others
- you can find short term and long term jobs
- working hours vary from 3-5 hours per day. Here in Morocco we were working 3 hours a day
- is it difficult with kids… not at all, we get them involved. They love the responsibility!

🏋️Have you ever thought of Workaway or HelpX to help fuel your travel adventures?

I’m jumping back to our first month in Morocco as I didn’t share much here on the grid. And our HelpX experience from Morocco is something I want to share and document here to remember forever.

For one month we stayed with our host Ahmed in his home in Tagounite, very near the Sahara. Ahmed is Amazigh which is one of the indigenous groups of Morocco. He lives in one of the toughest environments we have ever experienced.

And so our month living there with him was one of those incredibly challenging but rewarding adventures.

We helped fix the walls where the rain washed the mud away, we made mud bricks and learnt to cook an authentic Moroccan tagine. Most of all we got to experience Moroccan hospitality at its best.

Here is my personal record - the bits I don’t ever want to forget -
🦂 Scary stuff - the spiders and the bloody huge scorpions
⚒️ Tough stuff - using the tools to break the earth to make the mud
🔥 Hot stuff - walking 30-40 minutes to town in 40+ degrees
👀 Surprising stuff - the goats living in the house beside the kitchen
🥁 Fun stuff - hanging out listening to the music jam sessions
🐝 Humbling stuff - the generosity from all
🤢 Yuck stuff - the couple days of vomiting and diarrhoea
🦉 Learning stuff - the ease of adjustment to living without excess
🤍 Love stuff - evening family time in abundance

So there we go! HelpX and Workaway are just two platforms that we love to use. It not only means we are able to travel for longer cheaper… but most importantly we have life changing moments and memories.

🐌 One of the many great aspects of slow travel and world schooling is the time you get to dive deep into experiences and activities.

🌊 Our girls have thrived in their month-long surf lessons in Essaouira, Morocco.

💥 It’s given them a chance to reconnect with the sea in its wilder form and further build their confidence in the surf. All while meeting new people, making new friends, trying out new experiences, learning new skills and having an absolute blast.

🙏🏻 Thanks to the team @mogasurf & @loving.surf for the month long adventure. The girls can’t wait till we get to our next surf destination to try out their new found love for the surf 🏄🏼‍♀️ 🏝
